Our Philosophy
We believe our designs should have spatial unity and a quiescent elegance, sometimes with a bit of whimsy. They should be a reflection of our passion to create as well as a collaboration with our clients needs and desires. We at Pietre Dure Design work within the context of architectural, environmental, financial, historic and zoning requirements. We design our pieces using the latest construction techniques and the most innovative construction methods and products on the market. Whenever possible green construction methods are used to create a more sustainable design. A thorough site analysis indicates opportunities that exist at the intended installation. We strive to work with assets that a site possesses, not to recreate the site.
Why use Mosaics- Mosaics imbue a site with a rich sense of place. Mosaic is an art of intricacy and detail; pieces can be colorful and exuberant or muted and serene. The finished product is a very dimensional and tactile experience. A mosaic brings the quality of fine craftsmanship to its surroundings with texture and drama and an incredible ability to catch and reflect light. Mosaics were originally composed of pebbles, later the Romans created tessera: Stone cut into cubes. This ancient form is still the building block of all mosaics to this day. The materials used in ancient mosaic are the same used today- Stone, glass and tile. The hammer and hardie was designed hundreds of years ago and is used today for cutting and shaping tessera. It is one of my favorite tools. I cherish the historical aspects of this craft but work with contemporary materials to create work.
