Pietre Dure Design ("hard stone" in Italian) is a landscape design firm that specializes in mosaics and architectural installations for the landscape or home interior. The pieces are both functional and decorative. Exterior Installations have included: Medallions, wall hangings, columns, rills, stepping stones, water features, furniture and sculptures. Interior Installations are done primarily in kitchens and bathrooms but we have also done entryways and fireplaces. All work is custom and we use a variety of materials including: Handmade tiles, metal, marble, granite, tempered and vitreous glass, smalti, gold, pebbles and other types of stone that we carve by hand as well as high fired ceramic and polymer clay. There is an endless variety of materials that can be combined to make mosaics-This is a great opportunity to reuse selected objects that would otherwise get tossed out and to create a combination of materials that is completely individualized.

We believe our designs should have spatial unity and a quiescent elegance, sometimes with a bit of whimsy. Our designs are a reflection of our passion to create as well as our clients needs and desires. We at Pietre Dure Design work within the context of architectural, environmental, financial, historic and zoning requirements. We design our pieces using the latest construction techniques and the most innovative plants and construction methods and products on the market. Whenever possible green construction methods and native plants are used to create a more sustainable design. A thorough site analysis indicates opportunities that the exist within the land. We strive to work with assets that a site possesses, not to recreate the site.

Front Step Landing- Made of imported high fired porcelain ceramic this Tree of Life is filled with the flora and fauna that the residents of this home see on a regular basis- Fox, Bluebirds, Rabbits and Orchard Fruits and Flowers. This piece is covered with ice and snow for half the year and has not lost a tile yet. It can be shoveled off or cleaned with a broom.
	This is a three foot pebble medallion that also uses local peach granite rounds, and a mosaic with-in a mosaic: Leaves of  high fired porcelain on a wedi-substrate were placed into the pebblework. There is also some high fired ceramic tile that is used around the center and border of the medallion. This medallion is located in the beautiful display gardens at Farmer’s Daughter at 716 Mooresfield Road (Rte 138) Wakefield, RI.
