Painted Mosaic- This 30x45 foot room is half inside and half outside. It is at the Hotel Delamar in Southport CT and is used as a ballroom and function room. The hotel owner wanted a mosaic but felt that this would hold up as well and it certainly was faster to do! I worked with my assistant Alex and my Partner on this job Karen Oakley who is a faux painter and helped to execute the design.
We started with a white room and raw cedar floor then marked off the area with the border, then started to paint large sections that would have been similar to the Roman style of mosaic know as opus sectile where large slabs of stone were cut and fitted to each other, next we start to paint pebbles at the edge and leave the center medallion open. We then start to work in the center painting lapis lazuli, deep emerald and black marble, with red agate and other stone patterns in the center . This is what it looked like when we pulled back the stencils . After we were finished with the "stone rug" we worked on the walls giving them an aged antique wood look and then we created a design on the windows that would allow the light in but create some privacyafter dark when cars drove by. The surround on the floor was a black ebony so that the floor would pop. This room was completed in the fall and is open and viewable to the public.
