Community Projects - Advanced Pebble Mosaic - Seattle, WA

In October of 2008 I went to Seattle to teach four professional mosaic artists how to create pre-cast pebble mosaics at the invitation of Kelley Knickerbocker and she hosted  the class in her studio. The resulting mosaic (PebbleSunQuads) was installed at the Boys and Girls Club of Seattle (B&G club) the mosaic was installed over the winter under the direction of Landscape Architect Susan Black and Kelley Knickerbocker and long distance advice from me.

This was an advanced class and I have to say I had a ball with these women!!  This was a fast paced and intensive class and there were times when things just happened that could not have been anticipated and everyone worked very hard and stayed focused and we found a solution to what ever we needed to overcome. There is a great deal of physical labor and a lot of carpentry that goes into making these molds and I am sure it was eye opening to these dedicated students. They all dove in and kept up their energy and enthusiasm and produced a wonderful mosaic that will grace the entrance of the Boys and Girls Club for decades.

These gorgeous columns are in terminal A at the SEATAC airport. They are both large and impressive, they are  8’ wide
and about 30 tall, all done with smalti, indirectly by various artists.

From L to R, Angie Heinrich, Jo Braun, Lynn Adamo, Kelley Knickerbocker

Angie drills the top of the mold down while Jo and Lynn measure and locate
the drill holes on the top of the next mold.

Angie and Lynn take off the cover of the mold the next day. Yeah, they said, we did it! Note the cartoon under plastic on the piece in their hands, that was the bottom of the mold the day before.

Jo Braun, Deb Aldo, Lynn Adamo at the train station. Note the floors are all polished marble mosaic with compass rose and the detailing on the walls are  gold and emerald green glass in a classic design.
